Bactericidal activity of metronidazole against Bacteroides fragilis.
Metronidazole was found to be active against Bacteroides fragilis strains isolated from human lesions. The minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) were from 0.16 to 2.5 mug/ml and the minimal bactericidal concentrations (MBC) were from 0.16 to 2.5 mug/ml; usually the MIC and MBC figures were equivalent. These levels are easily attainable in the serum following normal therapeutic doses. The drug...
متن کاملActivity of sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim against Bacteroides fragilis.
Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and trimethoprim (TMP), alone and in three combinations, 20:1, 1:1, and 1:20, were determined on Diagnostic Sensitivity Test (DST) and Mueller-Hinton (MH) agars containing lysed blood for various inocula of 91 strains of Bacteroides fragilis from the U.S.A. and U.K. MICs of SMX were high with large inocula and higher on MH than ...
متن کاملCephalosporinase activity in Bacteroides fragilis.
Cephalosporinase activity was demonstrated in all of 10 strains of Bacteroides fragilis investigated. Low rates of hydrolysis of cephalosporins (0.25 to 3.5 mumol of cephaloridine per h per 10(9) cells) were found, but no activity against penicillin substrates was detected. In two strains the cephalosporinase activity was increased 40-and 80-fold by growing cells in the presence of penicillin. ...
متن کاملThe activity of five cephalosporins against Bacteroides fragilis.
Forty-two isolates of Bacteroides fragilis were tested against five new cephalosporin antibiotics by two quantitative methods, microdilution and agar dilution. Results indicated satisfactory methodological agreement. Mean minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of thienamycin, moxalactam, and ceftizoxime were significantly lower than with the other antibiotics tested.
متن کاملMutant prevention concentrations of four carbapenems against gram-negative rods.
We tested the propensities of four carbapenems to select for resistant Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Acinetobacter baumannii mutants by determining the mutant prevention concentrations (MPCs) for 100 clinical strains with various ss-lactam phenotypes. Among the members of the Enterobacteriaceae family and A. baumannii strains, the MPC/MIC ratios were mostl...
